What is Tidal Energy?
Tidal Energy is a source of renewable energy. It uses the ocean waves to create electricity. The tidal waves are formed by the gravitational effect of the sun and the moon on the earth. Therefore, tidal energy is a very predictive form of alternative energy which can be controlled in two different ways: tidal range and tidal stream.
how does tidal energy work?
The turbines are usually placed on the seabed at locations with high current velocities, or strong water currents where they will be able to extract energy from the flowing water.
Tidal turbines are similar to underwater windmills except it is driven by the flow of water currents. The turbines harness the power of the water currents to produce electricity. Because water is 832 times denser than air, these turbines can be placed closer together and still produce the same amount of electricity.
Artificial tidal barrages or lagoons are constructed to capture the tide. Turbines in the barrier or lagoon generate electricity as the tide floods into the reservoir. Water retained from the tide can also generate electricity once the tide outside of the barrier recedes back.
Tidal stream devices extract energy from the movement of the water to generate and produce electricity as wind turbines extract energy from the movement of the air to generate electricity.
